On September 26, 2019, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta reiterated his administration's commitment to resolving a maritime border dispute with Somalia through negotiation.

Addressing the 74th United Nations General Assembly in New York, Uhuru emphasized the importance of pursuing peace and stability in the region, stating that neighboring countries can only achieve their development agenda through such commitment.

"The commitment to pursue peace and security remains at the core of Kenya's Foreign Policy," Uhuru said, highlighting the country's efforts to advance peace and security in the region.

He welcomed the African Union Peace and Security Council's decision on September 3, 2019, urging both parties to engage in negotiations.

"It is this normative framework that informs Kenya's call for the resolution of this dispute through negotiation," Uhuru said, referencing the UN Charter and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Earlier, Uhuru met with his Somalia counterpart, Mohamed Farmaajo, in a meeting convened by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the current African Union chairman.
