On September 26, 2019, the Director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), George Kinoti, issued a warning to foreign nationals against buying gold from Kenyan dealers.

The warning comes after a recent raid at the Plan 254 Club in Kilimani, Nairobi, where DCI detectives recovered 147 bars of fake gold and $1 million in fake US dollars.

According to Kinoti, cases of gold scams have reached an all-time high, with unsuspecting foreigners and locals falling victim to scams involving rare African gold at friendly prices.

Kinoti advised that if purchasing gold is mandatory, individuals should seek advice from the Department of Mines and Geology for procedures on how to purchase and ensure the authenticity of the mineral.

Earlier, an Arab prince lost $800 million in a well-orchestrated gold scam involving rogue dealers, with top government officials and political brokers allegedly involved in the scheme.
