As the Central Bank of Kenya prepares to officially demonetize the Ksh. 1000 note on October 1, 2019, Safaricom has announced that its shops will no longer accept the old currency starting Friday, September 27, 2019.

The last day to collect the old Ksh. 1000 currency at Safaricom shops is Thursday, September 26, 2019, according to a statement from the mobile telco.

Naivas Supermarket has also issued a deadline of Sunday, September 29, 2019, for accepting old Ksh. 1000 notes. The retailer's Chief Commercial Officer, Willy Kimani, explained that they are taking caution to provide sufficient time to offload the stock of notes in its possession to its various banking partners.

Naivas Supermarket has set up cash tills that are able to detect fake notes, and the retailer has written to all its 47 branch managers in the country notifying them of the directive to stop receiving old Ksh. 1000 notes starting Sunday.

Other retailers, including Bata Kenya, have also set deadlines for accepting old Ksh. 1000 notes. Bata Kenya will stop accepting the old Ksh. 1000 bill with effect from September 25, 2019, in order to be compliant.
