Published on September 26, 2019, data from the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) reveals a notable uptick in forward hotel bookings for the period of September to December 2019 compared to the same period in 2018.
According to the MPC market perception survey, bookings for September (50%), October (52%), November (58%), and December (61%) 2019 were higher than the corresponding months in 2018, with September (49.7%), October (42%), November (44%), and December (47%) recording lower bookings.
CBK Governor, Patrick Njoroge, noted during the MPC press briefing that many hotels are already fully booked during the peak season, indicating strong growth in tourist numbers and high tourist arrivals.
On average, forward bookings increased by 15%, reflecting leisure bookings for both residents and non-residents over the peak season. This surge in bookings is likely to lead to higher receipts from tourism.
However, unfavorable weather conditions (rains) in some areas and high competition affected bookings to some extent.
