On September 26, 2019, the United Nations General Assembly meeting took place, where world leaders gathered to discuss pressing global issues, including climate change.
During the summit, the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged nations to take initiative and push for climate reforms before it was too late.
President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya was among the leaders present and was subsequently scolded by his peers regarding the climate change that has impacted Kenya negatively.
President Kenyatta took to the podium to respond to the criticism, concurring with teenage climate change activist Greta Thunberg over the impact that environmental changes would have on future generations.
According to records, Guterres warned world leaders that the United Nations Climate Action Summit would be tough and not business as usual.
President Kenyatta called upon other world leaders to follow Kenya's footsteps and take initiative, stating that Kenya had taken steps to meet its internationally agreed climate obligations in the sectors of the blue economy, energy, and the environment.
He emphasized that Kenya's commitment to tackling climate change arose out of the need to secure the future of its citizens and their children, who have been victims of droughts and declining rainfall that have destroyed lives and livelihoods.
