Published on September 26, 2019, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) faced intense questioning from a parliamentary committee over its inability to collect Sh158 billion in tax arrears during the 2014/2015 financial year.
Commissioner General James Mburu appeared before the Public Investment Committee (PIC) of the National Assembly, accompanied by senior KRA officials, to defend the agency's performance. However, he faced stiff resistance from the committee members, who expressed skepticism over the agency's claims.
According to Mburu, the outstanding arrears stood at Sh67 billion, but he attributed this to penalties slapped on defaulters. However, the committee members were not convinced, pointing out that the details provided were too general and did not specify the companies or individuals responsible for the arrears.
"Due to historical challenges with the legacy system, data cleaning is still in progress to further refine data on debt," Mburu said, but this explanation only fueled the committee's frustration.
