On September 25, 2019, Nairobi lawyer Donald Kipkorir wrote to the committee responsible for selecting lawyers to the Senior Counsels club, expressing his discontent with the final list.
According to Kipkorir, the committee overlooked gender and regional balance in the selection process, allegedly favouring criminal lawyers over commercial litigators.
The lawyer also questioned the committee's decision to go against the tradition of conferring sitting Attorney-Generals, Directors of Public Prosecutions, and Law Society of Kenya Presidents with the title.
Among the 24 successful candidates this time round were former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, former cabinet minister Martha Karua, and renowned lawyers Kiragu Kimani and Judy Thongori.
Conferment as Senior Counsel in Kenya is the highest honour a lawyer can achieve locally, and is equal to the Queen's Counsel title in the United Kingdom.
