Kim Kardashian has launched her new Skims waist trainer, promoting the product on Instagram with the claim that it makes her feel 'really snatched.'
However, experts are warning that waist training can be dangerous and cause serious internal damage. Dr. Caroline Apovian, director of nutrition and weight management at the Boston Medical Center, previously stated that 'wearing a waist trainer will only make your body appear smaller while you wear it.'
Waist trainers can also cause reflux and interfere with breathing, according to Dr. Apovian. Furthermore, Dr. Mary Jane Minkin, clinical professor of ob-gyn at Yale School of Medicine, has said that 'medically, it doesn’t make sense that cinching your waist tightly will make it permanently smaller.'
Once you take the garment off, your body will return to its usual shape, Dr. Minkin explained. The practice of waist training is also uncomfortable, restricts movements, and can even make it difficult to breathe and theoretically cause rib damage.
