As the country grapples with a surge in road accidents, Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang'i has directed the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to take action against private car owners who flout traffic rules.

Speaking at the annual road safety review meeting with County and Regional commanders at the Kenya School of Government, Dr. Matiang'i emphasized the need for increased vigilance on the roads, particularly during the last quarter of the year.

According to the latest report by NTSA, the number of accidents has risen by 1,048 to 7,229 as of July 1 this year, compared to 6,181 in the same month last year.

Moreover, pedestrians continue to bear the brunt of road accidents, with 620 lives lost in July this year, compared to 576 in July last year.

Dr. Matiang'i also directed all parastatals to return private number plates with immediate effect and use government-licensed number plates on their vehicles.

He further warned that those found guilty of compromising traffic rules risk losing their driving licenses.

As the government seeks to curb road accidents, Dr. Matiang'i urged Kenyans to be more careful on the roads and adhere to traffic rules to avoid losing their licenses.
