On September 25, 2019, Raila Odinga, the opposition chief, held a crucial meeting with MPs from western Kenya at his Capitol Hill offices to discuss a road map for countering Deputy President William Ruto's growing influence in the region.
The meeting marked an early move by ODM leader Raila to kick-start a campaign aimed at neutralizing Ruto's presidential ambitions ahead of the 2022 general elections.
Notably, Ruto has made significant inroads in Western Kenya, having recently toured Vihiga County, visiting Luanda, Hamisi, and Emuhaya just a fortnight prior to the meeting.
According to an aide, Raila met with ODM members of Parliament from Busia County, including Budalangi MP Raphael Wanjala, Butula MP Joseph H. Oyula, and Matayos MP Geoffrey Odanga, at Capitol Hill.
