Published on September 25, 2019, a report by Citizen Digital highlighted the deplorable state of Lesoituk ECD Primary School in Laikipia.
The school, which was started seven years ago, has a total of 69 pupils. However, the pupils face numerous challenges, including a collapsing mud-walled structure that serves as their classroom.
Without basic amenities such as chairs, desks, or a roof, the pupils have to bear with the scorching sun and dust. When it rains, learning cannot take place, and wild animals in the area sometimes disrupt their classes.
Security is also not guaranteed due to tribal clashes in the area, and parents have to escort their children to and from school. Water is also a scarce commodity in the semi-arid area.
Despite these challenges, the pupils are usually served with a cup of porridge in a small muddy house that serves as their kitchen. According to their teacher, Susan Pere, the cup of porridge is just to motivate them to come to school the next day.
Residents are urging the county government to deliver on its promise of providing classrooms. In response, Education CS George Magoha said, 'We are going to shut down schools which we feel are an immediate danger to learners.'
