On September 25, 2019, Somalia and Kenya made a significant step towards improving their relations, agreeing to normalize diplomatic ties and work towards a mutually beneficial future.
At a tripartite meeting facilitated by Egyptian President Abdulfatah El-Sisi at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Somali President Farmajo and Kenyan President Kenyatta reached a landmark agreement.
According to a press statement from Villa Somalia, the two leaders agreed to return diplomatic relations to where they were in February 2019 and take steps to build confidence between their governments and peoples.
As part of the agreement, a joint committee will be established to implement the fruitful agreements between Mogadishu and Nairobi.
The two leaders also committed to avoiding any further actions that could complicate the situation in the region and instead focus on the fight against terrorism.
However, Villa Somalia's press statement emphasized that the federal government of Somalia stressed the importance of respecting the role of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in managing the disputed maritime case.
