Kenya's Central Bank (CBK) has raised concerns over a spike in wheat cash buyers, but farmers in Narok have denied receiving 'dirty money' as claimed.

According to the farmers, they have stopped receiving cash money at the wheat fields two weeks ago and have instead been doing bank deposits and transfers with the buyers.

Some farmers in ilmashariani, Melili, and Ntulele told the Nation that they sell their wheat through the National Cereal and Produce Board (NCPB) while barley is bought by brewery companies, not individuals.

"For the few times we sell the cereals in the wheat fields, I agree on the prices according to the sacks harvested with the buyers and we accompany them to their banks where they deposit the cash into my account," said Mr Moses ole Kupees.

The CBK Governor, Patrick Njoroge, had raised the alarm over the spike in wheat cash buyers on Tuesday, September 24, 2019.

Published on September 25, 2019, the CBK maintained that there will be no extension of the September 30 deadline for the phase-out of the Sh1000 note, warning that those who will not have converted will lose out.
