A Nairobi court has taken a bold step in a debt recovery case involving former Youth Fund boss Gor Semelang'o.
On September 25, 2019, the court ordered the accuser, George Miyare, to pay for Semelang'o's upkeep while he serves a 30-day jail sentence for defaulting on a Sh3.6 million loan in 2015.
The loan has since accrued to over Sh9 million.
According to court documents, Semelang'o was arrested on Tuesday and committed to a civil jail after he failed to pay the debt, despite a warrant of arrest being issued against him in November 2017.
As part of the court order, Semelang'o is to stay in jail for 30 days without the option of bailing himself out, and Miyare is to pay for his upkeep, with a daily rate of Sh1,800 set for his subsistence.
“Whereas the said Evans Gor Semelang’o has neither obeyed the decree nor satisfied the court that he can he is entitled to be discharged from custody: you are hereby commanded and required to take and receive the said Evans Gor Semelang’o into civil prison and keep him imprisoned there in for a period of 30 days,” the court order directed to the officer in charge of Industrial Area GK Prison read.
