On a fateful Tuesday night in September 2019, a massive fire swept through Gakoromone in Imenti North, Meru, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
A two-year-old boy was among the victims, nursing severe burns after being rescued from the inferno. He was rushed to the Meru Level Five Hospital for treatment.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire was allegedly caused by a burning candle that had been left unattended in one of the houses. The candle is believed to have fallen onto a mattress, sparking the blaze.
Resident Tabitha Nzai recounted the harrowing experience, saying, “I went to the shop to buy something for supper but when I returned, I saw the houses were on fire. We have not managed to save anything.”
North Imenti Deputy County Commissioner Mahmoud Salim confirmed that police were investigating the cause of the fire, with a survey underway to aid in the recovery efforts.
