Published on September 25, 2019, the Ethiopian government has confirmed that more than 1,200 people have lost their lives in ethnic clashes over the past year.

The Attorney General's Office revealed that 1.2 million people were forced to flee their homes due to the violence.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed faces a significant challenge in addressing the ongoing tensions between rival ethnic groups, primarily over access to land.

Earlier this year, the government faced criticism from some rights groups for compelling displaced individuals to return to their home areas despite safety concerns.

With nine self-governing ethnic regions, Ethiopia has been grappling with the aftermath of conflict, which displaced nearly three million people in 2018 - the highest recorded figure worldwide.
