Published on September 25, 2019, Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter revealed plans to decommission three thermal power plants over the next five years.
The move aims to increase the adoption of renewable energy and improve the national grid's efficiency by constructing high voltage power lines to supply deficient regions.
The commissioning of the Lessos-Kisumu high voltage power line later this year will inform the decommissioning of the 60 megawatts Muhoroni thermal plant, according to Keter.
Additionally, the 165 megawatts Olkaria V geothermal plant is set to be commissioned next month, further driving efforts to boost electricity connection to households and businesses.
Keter emphasized that no power purchasing agreement by any thermal plant would be renewed, as the government targets to push electricity generation to only renewable sources.
