On September 25, 2019, Somalia's President Mohamed Farmajo and Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta met in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, amidst ongoing tensions over border demarcations between the two countries.
Kenya had sought to resolve the case before the International Court of Justice out of court, but Somalia insisted on a full hearing. The ICJ had already set November 8th as the commencement date for the case.
The meeting was convened by Egyptian President Al-Sisi, the current chair of the Africa Union, which had previously attempted to mediate a solution between the two countries.
Although the details of the meeting are unclear, it is reported that the two countries agreed to restore normal diplomatic relations as they seek a long-lasting solution to the dispute.
