Published on September 25, 2019, Kenya is planning a significant expansion of its solar power capacity with the development of two utility-scale projects, The Radiant and Eldosol.

The two projects, set to be built near Eldoret, will have a combined capacity of 80 megawatts and supply green electricity to approximately 300,000 Kenyan homes.

According to the European Investment Bank, the projects will be co-funded by the bank and the Nederlandese Dutch Bank FMO NV, Paramount Bank, with Frontier Energy serving as the project developer.

The European Investment Bank and FMO NV will each loan the solar project $53 million, with the remaining amount to be funded by the other partners.

Utility-scale solar power generation refers to the large-scale production of electricity through photovoltaic power stations and concentrated solar power.

The growth of utility-scale power generation is expected to reshape Kenya's energy economy for the better, providing cost-effective and cleaner power.

Unlike hydro and fossil-fueled power generation, utility-scale solar energy offers a lower cost of power with consistent prices, providing between ten to thirty years of affordable energy.
