On September 21, 2019, police arrested Mary Wanjiru, a regular worshipper at All Saints Cathedral Church in Nairobi, after she was caught on CCTV stealing from congregants during a wedding ceremony.
According to police reports, Wanjiru stole two handbags belonging to Margaret Njeri and Brenda Watiti, containing items worth over Sh60,000.
Wanjiru had returned to the church on Sunday when security guards alerted the police, who arrested her after confirming her identity through CCTV footage.
She had earlier pleaded guilty to the charges but denied the accusations when she was arraigned before Kibera senior principal magistrate Barbara Ojoo.
Ojoo granted her Sh100,000 bond and surety of the same amount, directing the case to be mentioned on October 8 and heard on November 11.
