Billionaire Chamanlal Kamani, a key figure in the Anglo-Leasing scandal, passed away on September 23, 2019, at the age of 88.

His body will be cremated at the Kariokor crematorium on Wednesday at 2pm.

Chamanlal Kamani made headlines in Kenya in 1950 with his grand entry into the country, but it was the Anglo-Leasing scandal that brought him international attention.

He was charged alongside his two sons, Deepak and Rashmi, with five counts of conspiracy to commit an economic crime and fraudulent acquisition of public resources totalling Sh10.4 billion for services not provided.

The offences, committed between July 2003 and June 2004, also implicated three companies that benefited from huge payments in Anglo-leasing contracts designed to provide modernised security surveillance systems for the police force.

The Anglo-Leasing scandal was a major blot on the administration of former President Mwai Kibaki and caused turbulence in President Uhuru Kenyatta's early days as Kenya was forced to meet its contractual end for services not provided.

Chamanlal Kamani's wealth portfolio was diverse, with the family owning some of the best hotels and resorts in the world, as well as having a stake in the dairy industry.

He leaves behind a wife and four children, as well as 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
