Abagusii Leaders Back Fred Matiang'i's Presidential Bid ¶
Abagusii leaders have resolved to raise funds to support Fred Matiang'i's 2022 presidential bid, with Kisii Governor James Ongwae offering to donate Sh1 billion.
According to sources, the meeting was held at Matiang'i's home in Karen, Nairobi, and was attended by a cross-section of Abagusii leaders, including Kisii Governor James Ongwae, Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama, Senators Sam Ongeri and Okong'o Omogeni, and several other leaders.
During the meeting, Governor Ongwae pitched for the community sponsorship of Matiang'i's candidature, arguing that a presidential candidate must get full support from their tribe before wooing support from other tribes and regions.
"This is a major community project. It is an opportunity of a lifetime which we should give a lot of seriousness. As governor I want to lead by example," said Governor Ongwae.
Governor Nyagarama confirmed his readiness to also donate a tidy sum and urged the senators and MPs to organize themselves and form a fundraising committee to involve MCAs, professionals, and other leaders in various fields to immediately start collecting additional funds.
Already, political leaders from the Gusii region who are opposed to Matiang'i's candidature have vowed that no amount of harassment, intimidation, and victimization from any quarter could make them soften their hearts, change their mind, and political stand against Matiang'i.
However, the leaders who are mainly members of the national and county assembly have already made their decision to support William Ruto for the top seat come 2022 general elections.
