On the morning of Wednesday, September 25, 2019, a fire broke out at the Busia county finance offices in Kenya, destroying crucial files.
According to Busia county deputy governor Moses Mulomi, the fire occurred at around 2am and only affected the finance office, which is located a short distance from the county government's fire station.
Speaking to journalists, Mulomi stated that the exact cause of the fire was not immediately clear and that an investigation had been launched to determine whether it was a case of arson or an accident.
He further disclosed that the finance office housed the county government's payroll system, but clarified that they had backup copies of all the files and documents that were at the office.
Firefighters were able to put out the fire, but the extent of the damage is still being assessed.
Busia county officials have confirmed that some crucial documents were destroyed in the incident, but the exact extent of the damage is still unknown.
