Published on September 25, 2019, a court hearing revealed concerns about the security of the Huduma Namba digital platform.
Information technology expert Anand Venkatanatayanan testified that the system is prone to hacking, citing Kenya's history of being a target for hackers.
Mr. Venkatanatayanan, a cyber security and computer fraud forensic analysis expert with 21 years of experience, was testifying in a case against the launch of the National Integrated Identity Management System (NIIMS).
He compared the NIIMS structure to India's Aadhaar system, stating that the technology used is not new and that Kenyans have no guarantee that their information, including personal emails, is secure in NIIMS.
The government had spent Sh6 billion on the system, which Mr. Venkatanatayanan described as archaic and bound to fail protection.
He argued that hackers would benefit from illegally acquired information on Kenyans from the NIIMS system.
