Published on September 25, 2019, a sex worker from Nairobi has been charged with abandoning her nine-month-old child. Nikita Kendi Mureithi is accused of intentionally and unlawfully leaving the toddler alone in the house on August 16, 2019.
According to a police report, the baby was left crying uncontrollably for hours, prompting neighbours to break into the house to rescue the child, who was found hungry and cold.
Mureithi claims she was drugged by a client and left for dead, only to regain consciousness hours later, unaware of the time that had passed.
‘I met a client who drugged and left me for the dead,’ she said in court. ‘By the time I resumed to my senses, I was counting many hours after leaving my child locked in the room alone in Njiru (Some 20 kilometers away).’
After a three-day search, Mureithi was found at a Night Club in the Nairobi CBD and released on a Sh 20,000 cash bail pending hearing on November 27 at the Makadara Chief Magistrate’s court.
