Published on September 25, 2019, a Sh700 million sewer treatment plant has sparked outrage among residents in Kaptimbor, Kabarnet.
Locals claim the project was undertaken without their input, despite being the immediate neighbours of the plant.
Resident Peter Kulei stated, “Public participation was not done. We wanted to be engaged, but we were ignored despite being the immediate neighbours of the plant. The project is within a residential area,”
Isaiah Biwott expressed concerns that about 100 households neighbouring the facility will be impacted negatively due to the potential pollution of nearby streams.
Another resident, Stanley Chelelgo, noted that while they were not opposed to the project, they were concerned about whether it had been planned properly to prevent it from becoming a health hazard.
The residents also complained that they had not benefited from jobs created by the project, with employees being people from outside the region.
Baringo National Environment Management Authority Director Nyandoro Josiah stated that a study had been conducted to assess the environmental impact of the sewer plant, but the residents could demand the report from the county government.
