Global Weeknight Dinners

As the sun sets around the world, families gather for weeknight dinners that reflect their unique cultural traditions and personal preferences.

For the Wasa Khuhaprema family in Bangkok, Thailand, dinner is a collaborative effort. Her two young sons help with cooking at least one night a week, and on this evening, they prepared an omelet with carrots, stir-fried minced pork and eggplant, and southern Thai sour curry with cauliflower. Family members are expected to clean up after themselves.

Across the globe, in Gurgaon, southwest of New Delhi, the Osans family enjoys a meal prepared by their cook. The family eats around 9 p.m., and on this night, the meal consisted of palak paneer (spinach with cheese), raita, kadai aloo (potatoes with onions and spices), cucumber salad, and roasted chapatis.

From Rome, Italy, Claudia Bellucci shares her family's dinner routine. She does most of the cooking and picked herbs from her terrace for saltimbocca alla Romana (veal rolled with ham and sage). She also served homemade pesto with trofie pasta, a salad, and baked tomatoes au gratin.

Other families featured in this article include the Khojandis in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, who eat their main meal in the evening, usually around 7 p.m.; the Levy family in Paris, France, who eat at around 7 p.m. but on the Sabbath, the meal begins around 8; and the Garzas in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, who get weeknight dinner on their table with help from an Instant Pot.

These families, and many others, showcase the diversity and richness of weeknight dinner traditions from around the world.
