Published on September 24, 2019, the Punguza Mizigo Bill, a key proposal by Thirdway Alliance leader Ekuru Aukot, failed to gain traction in the Nyamira County Assembly.

The bill, which aimed to reduce the number of elected representatives, was tabled at the Assembly by Township MCA Duke Masira, who is also Leader of Majority.

However, the bill hit a dead end after Bomwagamo MCA Charles Barongo, who was supposed to second it, declined to do so.

Barongo shot up and declared his intention not to support the bill, stating, "I have risen but not to second the Aukot Bill," and sat down.

Speaker Moffat Teya called for the next business in the Order Paper to be called, effectively killing the bill.

Addressing journalists outside the Assembly, Barongo said the Bill lacked issues on gender and disability representation.

"Aukot is taking MCAs for a ride. Amalgamation of constituencies is not good for the country, and the falsehood he is representing in the Bill that MCAs are taking over is hoodwinking Kenyans," he said.
