On September 24, 2019, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati made a shocking revelation about his role in validating McDonald Mariga's registration details for the Kibra by-elections.

According to Chebukati, he was forced to clear Mariga's candidacy despite knowing that the soccer star did not meet the legal requirements to contest in the elections.

"There are certain things someone does only when forced, but the truth will set us free," Chebukati said in a statement.

Chebukati clarified that Mariga's registration details were not in order, and he was not eligible to vote or contest in the elections. However, he was forced to clear his candidacy due to external pressure.

He criticized politicians who have vested interests in the electoral process and have been known to interfere with the IEBC's duties.

"The commission is unable to make any meaningful progress because we find ourselves forced to do things against our conscience," Chebukati said.

He called on political leaders to shun this retrogressive culture and embrace honesty and truthfulness so that the rule of law can apply to all.
