On September 24, 2019, a suspected cholera outbreak was reported in Kisumu County, Kenya, resulting in the death of at least one person and hospitalizing 31 others.

The outbreak was confirmed by Dr. Dickens Onyango, the director of medical services, who stated that the government had taken measures to prevent further spread of the disease.

Residents living along River Awach were cautioned against consuming water from the river, which is suspected to be the source of the contamination.

Four patients exhibiting cholera symptoms were admitted to Gita Hospital in Kajulu, where the outbreak was first reported, while 27 others have since been treated and discharged.

The outbreak is not the first to affect residents of Ong'adi village in Kajulu, with a similar outbreak claiming a life and hospitalizing several individuals a few weeks prior.
