The Sh460 million Mama Ngina Waterfront project in Mombasa has taken a significant step forward with the establishment of a management board.
According to a Kenya Gazette notice number 8552 published on September 13th, 2019, the board will be responsible for providing effective oversight over the development of the waterfront.
The board will comprise of several members, including the Principal Secretary of the State Department of Tourism, the County Secretary of Mombasa County Government, and the Director General of the National Museums of Kenya, among others.
Speaking on the matter, Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala stated that the board will also prepare and submit a sustainability plan for the Mama Ngina Waterfront.
Additionally, the board will be tasked with identifying additional sources of funding for the development of the waterfront and recommending the same to the Cabinet Secretary.
Reacting to the development, KCTA chairman Victor Shitakah expressed his delight at being included in the board and pledged the organization's support to help grow Mombasa's tourism industry.
The Mama Ngina Waterfront, which sits on a 26-acre parcel of land facing the Likoni crossing channel, was initially supposed to be completed by May 31st, 2019.
However, due to changes in designs, the project had to be delayed.
