Published on September 24, 2019, the Mombasa tea auction saw smallholder tea from the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) maintain its top position in the market, outperforming other local offerings.
At Sh247 per kilo, KTDA's produce fetched the highest price compared to other local teas, which earned Sh220 for the same quantity.
The average price of tea at the auction has held above Sh200 per kilo after months of trading as low as Sh182, driven mainly by high demand.
"Our tea is always of the highest quality because of the consistent quality management," said KTDA, accounting for the bulk of total production in the market.
Kenya sells over 95 percent of its tea to the world market, making it the number one exporter of black teas.
