As the Building Bridges Initiative Task Force prepares to present its report to President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, it's essential to remember the true purpose of this initiative.
On March 9, 2018, President Kenyatta and Mr. Odinga shook hands at Harambee House, unveiling a nine-point agenda aimed at addressing Kenya's deep-seated problems, including ethnic antagonism, corruption, and divisive polls.
The agenda included inculcating a national ethos, entrenching inclusivity, and ironing out chinks in the devolved system of government. It also aimed to find a cure to the culture of divisive and violent polls, ensure safety and security for all, and tackle corruption.
Unfortunately, the Building Bridges Initiative has been hijacked by petty politics, with some politicians using it as a means to benefit themselves rather than the country. The initiative's true value will be judged on its actual recommendations, not just its completion date.
It's time to step back and remind ourselves what Building Bridges was all about. The task force should keep in mind that a solution to ethnic antagonism and violent politics demands more than accommodation between two protagonists.
As the report is presented, it's essential to separate fact from fiction and focus on the real issues that affect Kenya. The Building Bridges Initiative has the potential to bring about positive change, but only if it stays true to its original purpose.
