On September 22, 2019, the Shimoni Port Project Implementation Team made a crucial decision to construct a new jetty for fish landing in Shimoni, Kenya. The team, led by Kwale County Commissioner Karuku Ngumo, resolved to avoid disrupting commercial activities at the existing old jetty.
The initial plan was to have the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) upgrade the existing fish landing site in Shimoni, but this plan has been shelved. Instead, the KPA team, led by William Tenay, head of Projects Development and Management, will construct a new jetty to enable large-scale fishermen to land their catch.
Engineer Tenay emphasized that the Shimoni port is one of the key development projects in the authority’s 30-year master plan. The project aims to improve Kenya’s marine competitiveness as an investment hub, with a focus on fishing and other conventional cargo.
During the meeting, Eliud Lelerai, a director at the Presidential Delivery Unit, urged the team to come up with a delivery chain of the project, identifying the bottlenecks likely to occur for each of the drivers.
