On September 23, 2019, smallholder tea producers in Kenya celebrated a significant milestone as their produce fetched the highest price at the Mombasa auction, outperforming other local offerings.

The Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA), which represents small-scale farmers, saw its tea sell at Sh247 per kilo, a significant increase from the average price of Sh200 in the last three sales.

This marks the fifth consecutive time that KTDA teas have registered an increase in value, with the average price in Mombasa improving to Sh208 per kilo in sale 38 from Sh205 in sale 37.

According to KTDA, the high quality of their tea is due to consistent quality management, which has contributed to the rise in price.

Kenya is the world's number one exporter of black teas, with over 95 percent of its tea being sold globally. The Mombasa auction is currently the largest black CTC tea auction centre in the world, trading tea from over 10 other countries in Africa.
