On September 19, 2019, South-African retailer Shoprite signed a memorandum of understanding with the Kenya Union of Commercial Food and Allied Workers (Kucfaw), paving the way for negotiations on staff remuneration.

Shoprite, which operates three branches in Kenya with plans to open more, has agreed to work with Kucfaw to ensure its employees are well catered for. The union represents employees of retailers like Chandarana and Tuskys.

Shoprite currently employs around 500 people in Nairobi and Mombasa. The signed document outlines the terms of the agreement, including negotiable issues such as pay, overtime, and paid leave.

According to Kucfaw secretary-general Bonface Kavuvi, the next step is to draft a Collective Bargaining Agreement, which will set various bands and salary ranges for employees.

"We are glad that Shoprite now recognises the union and has pledged to work with us in ensuring that employees are well catered for. This agreement paves the way for salary negotiations for the employees," Kavuvi said.
