On September 23, 2019, smallholder tea from the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) maintained its top position in the market at the Mombasa auction, continuing to outperform other local offerings.

The tea fetched a price of Sh247 per kilo, significantly higher than other local teas that earned Sh220 for the same quantity.

This marked the fifth consecutive time that KTDA teas had registered an increase in value, with the average price in Mombasa improving to Sh208 per kilo in sale 38 from Sh205 in sale 37.

According to KTDA, the high quality of their tea was due to consistent quality management.

Kenya sells over 95 percent of its tea to the world market, making it the number one exporter of black teas.
