Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has come under fire for his handling of the collapsed classroom at Precious Talent Top School, which left seven pupils dead.

On Monday, Sonko issued a statement expressing his condolences to the families and friends of the affected pupils, describing the accident as 'tragic.'

However, in a move that has sparked outrage, Sonko shifted the blame for the tragedy to the Ministry of Education, claiming that the inspection and approval of primary and secondary schools falls under the ministry's jurisdiction.

But the school owner, Mr Moses Wainaina, has revealed that the accident may have been caused by a sewer line which was recently dug behind the classrooms by Sonko's administration, thus weakening the building's foundation.

Wainaina stated, 'They had good intentions to help this school but an accident has happened.'

Despite this, Sonko defended his administration, saying, 'It is also important to note that the inspection and approval of primary and secondary schools falls under the Ministry of Education. However, this is not the right time to exchange blame, but to take responsibility as leaders.'

As part of his defense, Sonko also revealed that he had suspended the County Chief Officer for Planning, Mr Justus Kathenge, following complaints from members of the public.

According to Sonko, an audit conducted at the county Planning department exposed the activities of rogue officials, including Kathenge, who were flouting the Physical Planning Act and zoning regulations with impunity.

Sonko vowed to demolish structures without proper approvals within the county to avert such accidents in future and pursue the prosecution of the responsible individuals.

He also promised support to the bereaved families and the injured pupils from the Monday morning incident as well as Precious Talent Top School.
