On September 19, 2019, SportPesa applied to the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) for the renewal of its licence, following a directive by the board.

According to SportPesa's communications boss Jean Kiarie, the company received a letter on September 18, 2019, asking them to reapply for the licence, which they did immediately.

Ms Kiarie expressed hope and optimism that the board will act fast on their application, saying, "We remain hopeful the board will not take their sweet time to verify our application."

She added that once cleared, SportPesa will hit the ground running and restart all their sponsorship agreements that were affected by the cancellation of their operating licence.

"Once we are back, we will review the business position and restart sponsorship of all our previous agreements," Ms Kiarie said, adding that the firm remains committed to promoting and developing sports in the country.

The move will hand struggling football giants Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards a financial lifeline, as the two teams have been going through a rough time after SportPesa pulled out of their sponsorship deal following the seizure of their operating licence due to non-tax compliance issues.
