With the rise of smartphones, it's becoming increasingly difficult to maintain focus at work. According to researchers, it takes a person 15 consecutive minutes of focus to fully engage in a task. However, the constant urge to check notifications often compromises our productivity.

Enter Carl Newport, author of Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World. He defines deep work as 'professional activities performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that push your cognitive capabilities to the limit.' This type of work creates new value and improves skills.

To attain this state of 'distraction-free concentration,' it's essential to avoid multitasking. Multiple studies have shown that multitasking makes people less productive and effective. Instead, focus on a single task and give it your undivided attention.

Another strategy is to turn off digital notifications. Put your smartphone on silent mode, and consider using apps or tools that limit social media behavior. The NewsFeed Eradicator, a Chrome extension, can eliminate your Facebook feed and replace it with an inspiring quote. StayFocusd is another tool that allows you to block certain websites at specific times of the day.

Exercise is also crucial for improving focus. Studies have shown that a single workout can enhance your ability to focus, and this improvement can last up to two hours. Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical exercise three to four times a week.
