On September 20, 2019, Maina Kamanda, the Jubilee nominated MP, made a surprise endorsement of ODM's candidate Imran Okoth in the Kibra by-election, claiming that he had been instructed by State House to do so.
According to Sifuna, the decision was taken after Deputy President William Ruto allegedly ambushed President Uhuru Kenyatta by sneaking in Jubilee's candidate in Kibra, McDonald Mariga, into State House via the car boot.
“Recently when we saw Mariga being given a Jubilee hat by President Kenyatta, opponents of the handshake were very happy saying the handshake was dead. The truth is that Mariga sneaked into State House by hiding in Ruto’s car boot. When asked at the gate, he said he was alone only to surprise the President,” Sifuna told a rally in Kibra.
That same day, State House sent Maina Kamanda to Raila's office to show support and campaign for ODM's candidate Imran, Sifuna claimed.
