On the night of Saturday, September 21, 2019, a massive fire broke out at Kisumu Jua Kali market, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire started when a guard on duty was burning rubbish, causing sparks to fly and ignite a nearby stall containing gas cylinders, which led to a massive explosion.
Kisumu County Police Commander Benson Maweu confirmed that no injuries were reported, but the fire had a devastating impact on the traders, with most of the affected stalls containing valuable items such as gas cylinders, tyres, and motor vehicle engine oil.
