On September 20, 2019, the Federation of Kenya Employers held its 3rd Annual Employer of the Year Awards at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Nairobi. Safaricom took home the top prize, Employer of the Year, for its commitment to promoting best practices in corporate performance, people management, and labor relations.

The award, which was introduced in 2017, recognizes organizations that excel in various aspects of their business, including leadership and governance, corporate performance, innovation and productivity, and workplace environment. Safaricom's CEO, Michael Joseph, attributed the win to the company's unique employer value proposition and inclusive culture.

"We continuously look to improve the workplace through a unique employer value proposition and an inclusive culture. This recognition would not be possible without our customers and partners, who enable us to live out our purpose of transforming lives," said Michael Joseph.

Along with the Employer of the Year award, Safaricom was also recognized for its Inclusiveness & Diversity and Effective Human Resource & Industrial Relations practice. The company emerged as the first runner-up in the Corporate Performance, Innovation & Productivity, and Workplace Environment categories.

As part of its commitment to diversity and inclusion, Safaricom has implemented various initiatives, including a 50:50 employee gender ratio and a 2.1% staff composition of persons with disabilities. The company has also launched the Safaricom Digital Academy, a program aimed at empowering and training employees in digital careers.
