On 22 September 2019, a heated exchange erupted between Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i and Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot at a funeral in Borabu Constituency in Kericho County.
Senator Cheruiyot had addressed the mourners, claiming that six months prior, Homa-bay County ODM leaders, led by Homabay Senator Moses Kajwang, were plotting to impeach Dr. Matiang'i.
Cheruiyot further alleged that CS Matiang'i had secretly met with Deputy President William Ruto after learning of the impeachment motion.
However, when Dr. Matiang'i took the stage to address the mourners, he denied the allegations, stating that he had never set foot in the Deputy President's office and had not met with Ruto.
Dr. Matiang'i urged the leaders to refrain from spreading lies in churches, emphasizing the need for truth in public forums.
Senator Cheruiyot countered, claiming that he had been summoned by DP Ruto, who inquired about the impeachment story, and that the planned impeachment was subsequently dropped.
Deputy President Ruto's allies have also raised concerns that CS Matiang'i's efforts to spearhead government projects are actually aimed at thwarting Ruto's 2022 presidential bid.
