Philemon Otieno's remarkable football journey has been marked by mystery and neglect. Despite his impressive skills, the Kenyan midfielder's career is now threatened by a knee injury sustained during a Chan qualifier against Tanzania.

Otieno's rise to fame began with Kenya Revenue Authority's Ushuru team, where he showcased his exceptional midfield abilities. His subsequent move to Gor Mahia saw him instrumental in winning the league, earning him a spot in the national team Harambee Stars.

However, his stint with Harambee Stars was marred by controversy, including a perceived costly penalty against Senegal during the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. Despite this, Otieno's performance was commendable, and he had the nation's attention.

But fate has dealt him a cruel blow. A few weeks ago, Otieno suffered an injury during a Chan qualifier against Tanzania, which requires knee surgery to prevent his career from coming to an end.

The lack of insurance for Harambee Stars players has left Otieno and his family in a precarious situation. The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has refused to foot the bill for his surgery, citing financial constraints. Gor Mahia, his current club, has also taken a backseat, expecting FKF to cover the costs.

As a result, Otieno's career hangs in the balance, a stark reminder of the neglect and lack of support for Kenyan footballers. The incident serves as a stark warning about the state of elite sports in Kenya, where players are left to fend for themselves when injured on international duty.
