On September 21, 2019, a tragic incident occurred in Kabianga Village, Molo, where a 13-year-old girl, Sharon Chepkurui, took her own life after being punished by her parents for spending a night out without their consent.

According to her father, Simon Mitei, Sharon did not return home on the previous evening, leaving her parents worried. When Mitei's wife returned with Sharon, they were both angry and punished her for her actions.

However, the couple left Sharon at home and headed to the farm, only to return late in the evening to find her dead. Mitei recalled calling out to his daughter several times, but she did not respond. Upon entering the house, he found her body dangling from the roof, where she had hanged herself with a rope.

Tragically, this incident is not an isolated one. A 16-year-old boy from the neighbouring Michina village also committed suicide the previous day. In a separate incident, a Form Two student at Poror High School, Stephen Arasa, took his own life after being suspended from school.

Michina Chief Kennedy Kiago has called on parents to be close to their children, especially those exhibiting changes in behaviour. The incidents highlight the need for parents to be more understanding and supportive of their children's needs.
