September 23, 2019 - Liverpool's perfect start to the Premier League season continued with a hard-fought 2-1 win at Chelsea, leaving them five points clear at the summit.
The European champions opened a two-goal lead in the first half, courtesy of Trent Alexander-Arnold's clever free kick and Roberto Firmino's powerful header.
However, it was not just their attacking prowess that secured the win, but also their steely work ethic under pressure, as Jurgen Klopp's side showed resilience after the break to keep Chelsea at bay.
'The boys did really well and fought really hard. I don't think there is any other way to win here,' Klopp said in praise of his team's effort.
Chelsea made a spirited fightback in the second half, with N'Golo Kante pulling a goal back in spectacular fashion, but they missed late chances to equalise and fell to a second defeat of the season.
For Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, there were positives to take from the game, despite his side's continued struggles at home.
'It is hard to accept congratulations after a loss, but the second-half display is close to where we want to be,' Lampard said.
