On September 20, 2019, hundreds of Egyptians took to the streets in Cairo and other cities to demand the departure of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

Among those arrested was Mahienour El-Massry, a political activist and human rights defender, who was detained as soon as she left the State Security Prosecutor's headquarters in Cairo, according to Tarek al-Awadi.

El-Massry, a lawyer for several of those arrested during the demonstrations, has been tried and jailed twice for participating in protests.

Her latest arrest comes as Egypt has effectively banned protests under a law passed following the 2013 ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi.

El-Massry received the Ludovic Trarieux Award in 2014 for her contributions to human rights while in prison, serving a sentence for participating in a demonstration without a permit.

She was given another year-long sentence in 2015 for taking part in a sit-in during Morsi's rule.
