On Sunday, September 22, 2019, police in Mombasa launched a successful operation against a suspected gangster, Abdallah Swaleh alias Vumbi, who had been on their watch list for involvement in criminal activities.
According to eyewitnesses, Vumbi and four others, armed with machetes, were attacking residents at Wa Maka area when they were ambushed by police.
Likoni OCPD Benjamin Rotich stated that the suspects refused to surrender and attempted to attack the police officers, prompting them to open fire, killing one of them on the spot as the others escaped.
Police recovered two pangas at the scene, and the body of the deceased was taken to the Coast General Hospital mortuary.
Just last month, a security crackdown on criminal gangs was launched in Mombasa following a series of vicious attacks by the Wakali Wao gang.
