On September 22, 2019, Sukari Industries Limited, a private miller owned by Rai, announced plans to build a six-megawatt power generation plant to run its factory operations in West Nyokal, Kanyikela, Ndhiwa sub-county.
The power generation plant will use sugar cane bagasse (biomass) as a fuel to generate steam, and the power generated will be used to run the factory operations.
The Energy & Petroleum Regulatory Authority has called on any persons objecting to the move to do so in a letter to the regulator.
The firm is the latest to venture into own power generation as manufacturers diversify into other income-generating activities, driven by stiff competition from other processors and cheap imports that have hit sugar millers' revenues over time.
